How to Style an Oversized Coat in Winter
A substantial coat can look deliberate without sacrificing warmth. Begin with the way the coat opens, the relationship between top and trousers, and the space around your shoes. There is no single proportion that suits every person or every coat.

01 / Keep a clear line underneath
With an open coat, a top and trousers in related colours create a continuous base. If the weather calls for a fastened coat, check that the front lies comfortably and the scarf is not overcrowding the neckline. Do not leave a coat open just to reproduce a look when you need the warmth.
02 / Define the waist without forcing it
A shorter knit, higher-waisted trousers or a light front tuck can clarify the relationship between the upper and lower half. Thick clothing does not always tuck neatly, so a shorter top may be a more comfortable option. A belt is optional, and it should not make sitting down or breathing feel restricted.
03 / Check the final few inches
A long trouser hem can bunch over a detailed shoe and make the lower half feel busy. Try a cleaner shoe or a different trouser length before changing the entire outfit. With a skirt and boots, check the walking movement too. The aim is an outline you enjoy wearing, not a universal rule about how tall you should look.
Before you head out
- Choose a base layer with a clear shape.
- Keep the waist comfortable when sitting down.
- Make sure long hems do not obstruct walking.
